2009 Gloom & Doom Update: Suicide Rates on the Rise

One of the side effects of the worsening global economy and unemployment is the increase in suicides and suicide attempts. The numbers of cases (high profile and of “normal people“) being reported has increased significantly.

Asian economies like South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong have all reported increases and are planning for more. South Korea and Japan are installing blockades for railway tracks so people do not jump in front of trains. Hong Kong has increased the numbers of operators for its suicide hotlines.

The US is also experiencing an increase in calls to suicide hotlines in places like New YorkTampa, Dallas, Washington DC metro area and California. What is far more worrying is the increase in suicide attempts at universities like the University of California, Santa Barbara. Europe is not spared either with countries like Serbia reporting the highest suicide rates in Europe and 55% of the population shows signs of depression.

The global economy is going to get worse over the upcoming months. If anyone you know is showing signs of depression make sure they get help.

  3. I started to write an intellectualized response to your post, but I couldn’t complete it. I asked myself, “What do I know about suicide?” and I remembered a family friend who killed himself five years ago after losing his job.

Before he did it, he tried to contact several members of my extended family, but they were all unavailable, for various reasons. They never knew what he wanted to tell them.

To this day, they wonder whether they could have helped him. They wonder whether they should have seen it coming. They grieve the lose of their friend, who can never be brought back or replaced. They grieve a death that was unnatural and unnecessary.

They still want to tell him how much they loved him, and how they would have done anything to support him through the crisis.

They want to tell him that the present moment is but a connection between the past and the future. It will pass. They want to sit with him and hold his hand until the moment passes, but it’s too late.

Where were the other people who loved this man? Perhaps he had no one else. We don’t know.

Are the root causes of suicide preventable? I believe so, by strengthening the connections between individuals, by nurturing interdependence rather than alienation, and by loving, consciously, deliberately.

That’s all I know about suicide. It’s not much, but I hope my meager comments reinforce the last line of your post: “If anyone you know is showing signs of depression make sure they get help.”

  4. Thank you ,Finally someone has posted what we have been reporting at our site for some time .We stop suicide on our site. Our whole site is dedicated to stopping suicide. 5. I am not boasting, this is scientific based that one can stop suicidal thought http://suiciderateup.wordpress.com

  6. Marahm: it is very hard for the family and friends left behind after suicide. There is so much grief and second guessing. One can only pray for strength and patience.

Spirithappy: We are in complete agreement. Depression is completely treatable through medicine, psych help, support and faith. It is sad when ppl are so full of despair that they would rather kill themselves than deal with the world around them

  8. People you do not understand what the people are going through if you are complaining about what the ones left behind have to do. Before the internet this was not so widespread or known to everyone. As the economy falls so do people. That is a fact of life. No matter what you say or do you cannot stop the world from turning! It is horrible I agree, although many are not looking at what the wise people are thinking when they do this they are not giving up there lives for no reason. Some are giving up there lives for yours. Try to see there side of it, as the economy falls people have less money right. Divide $27 million dollars among 27 million people! $1 dollar each right! maybe they want there children to survive by making a sacrifice they believe will save them. It is true and sad yes although people that make these decisions do not have bad intentions. Think about how hard it is to see your family suffer knowing you are dragging there family economic structure down. It is not an easy decision people make, although some do care about there family. Enough to give up there lives just to see them live and for there happiness.

  9. Some people are giving there lives to save there family. If you are not in that crisis, I can understand how it would be hard to see the truth. Although when the truth sinks in, that is really when people begin to start opening there eyes and seeing the world around them. They begin to see the meaning of life! Death is a part of life, and because the rich keep getting more forceful, greedy, and slave driven. Especially with wages, because they are afraid of living the life of people they have treated badly, just look at the economy collapsing and they just stand there watching in fear!

  10. There is plenty of reason why someone would like to die. Many are insolvable problems because they are not under the control of the person who wants to die. As for myself, it’s for a series of failures due to health problems. By accumulating failures after failure, sadness, deception, despair and that sort of bad feeling appears. You go as far as wonder why you are here. Why keeping this nightmare alive. If a situation like that means “living”, I would prefer death.

    BUT !
There is an important aspect to take into consideration. Because I care about all who are around me, I will not go ahead with my plan. Plan that has almost certainty of success.
I will not transfer my own nightmare to my surrounding, even if they are not always thinking or caring about me

This is the reason why I’ll stay here and endure. A normal death can be accepted with time, not suicide.
My own mother left us before I could even talk so I not what I’m talking about.

(sorry if you find mistakes in my writing, English is not my native).

    Sébastien
    Life must go on.
